I don't think this is a particularly new thing although it may be on the rise.

Some say that there are police officers in league with the girls and in some cases even a lawyer and a fiscal may benefit financially in what appears to be a Gringo sting.

If this is the case then there is little chance of stopping it unless you can expose/embarrass the people involved at the top.

A Gringo accused of a crime, albeit falsely, generally has weak leverage here unless they have some good contacts. This shouldn't be the case, but many say that is how it works here.

Also, lawyers here are always more than happy to take a case when there is a chance to sting a foreigner - it's easy money! If the Dominican Law Association ever disbarred a dodgy lawyer - then everybody would be better off - but if even the President admits that many Government officials are corrupt, what chance has the rest of the society got?

Having said that, as you indicated in your post, it might be a good idea if anyone else who has information about these case to post here, then we could all get a better idea on what is actually happening.

The same thing happened to me but this time it was acar accident. A Dominican hit me but served me with papers claiming all sorts of things. It was only then that I found out how MANY people that had happened to.
