Hiring a taxi is one of the easiest ways to get around the Dominican Republic. Taxis are everywhere and relatively inexpensive. Most taxi drivers will be more than happy to take you wherever you wish to travel to, even if you wish to travel to Santo Domingo or Santiago.

All the major airports have taxi stands which usually operate a fixed tariff so you can be sure of the exact cost before you take one. These are not usually very negotiable on price, as they are unionized. Outside of the airports, you can often negotiate with the individual taxi drivers. In some cases, they will offer to act as your tour guide as well, so this can make a pleasant option if you want to do some sightseeing.

Many taxis speak multiple languages aside from Spanish, and indeed, the taxis featured on this business directory speak fluent English, so there should not be too many communication issues!

Taxis can either be rented to be your own private driver, or some taxis particularly on the major routes act more like buses and tend to stick to a defined route, picking up and dropping off passengers on the way. These are known locally as streeet-cars or "Gua-guas', which are the larger vans. The tend to charge much less than a private taxi as you would expect, and often get quite crowded. Not usually the way more visitors choose to travel when on vacation, but always there as a budget option.
