Don't use the ATM at Ban Reservas in Sosua. It ate my ATM card. When I went in the bank to retrieve it they wouldn't give it back. Said they can't/won't. Completely unhelpful!!! I spoke with the manager there and would not leave his office until he gave me HIS supervisor's number. I will be persuing this issue until I have it resolved. They can't treat clients with such disrespect. Yeah, I know that's the culture but I'm tired of the "it's not my problem" attitude. Thanks for letting me rant!

you should also immediately report to your own bank (if not the same) so they can cancel that card, to avoid any strange withdrawals!

Best is to use cheques from overseas banks and cash them at your cambio office. Avoid Dominican banks.

andrea you are right about going into the banks, but there is no such law that you speak of.

It has been reported for years not to use ATMs here, in fact do not use international ccards here at all.
The Banks have nothing to do with the ATMs they are owned and run by a private company. Nobody that has lived here for years uses them. Get a Dominican ccard card, or only go inside the banks to use your international cards.

In all the years I have lived here I have met with pleasant helpful people and not the attitude you describe. It is all a question of how you behave, not them. Please remember this is their country and not yours, so behave accordingly and you will get a very pleasant result. A smile and pleasant attitude works wonders.
I have witnessed some dreadful, arrogant, rude, foul mouthed behaviour from ex pats here, who think they are way "up there", that is why many of us long term residents prefer the company of Dominicans

The only answer is: Let's go back to our homecountries!
