Can anyone tell me if the recession has had much effect in the DR yet, or if it is yet to take effect?

hmmm, the Government says its not effecting the DR, but I think they are not being entirely truthfull. From what I hear, real-estate sales are well down.
I thin kit will get worse here before it gets better.

The worldwide recession affects everyone, the DR is having mixed effects because we are a different kind of market. We are still developing real estate here, and it is far safer to invest here than in the States or Europe right now. Prices are down, which is good for investors but not as low as in other countries that are more severely hit as they are not tourist destinations like us.
