1. Visit your country's embassy with a copy of your passport and driver's license. They will certify that your license is valid in the country of origin. For Canadians this is a wait of three days and a cost of RD$1800.00.
For Canadians:
Canadian Consulate Santo Domingo
Av. Winston Churchill 1099
Torre Citigroup en Acropólis Center, piso 18
Ensanche Piantini, Santo Domingo, República Dominicana
809-262-3100
sdmgo@international.gc.ca
2. Take the certification letter to be authenticated at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Go into the Ban Reservas next door first and tell them what it is you are getting done. The cost will be RD$620.00. To eliminate having to return to the bank when doing the next step, ask to pay the fee for changing over your license as well. It will be RD$950.00. Then go to the Ministry and get in line to deposit your documents.
For all:
Cancilleria
Av. Independencia No. 752
Estancia San Gerónimo
Santo Domingo Distrito Nacional
República Dominicana.
3. Next you will proceed to the Secretary of State of Public Works. At the front desk you will get three photocopies of your lisence, cedula, residency card, documents and receipts, it will be RD$.05 for each copy. You will then take this to the Juridico DGTT and then the Sub-direccion DGTT offices. From there the process gets a bit quicker. The steps are numbered and you need only to do step 1, 2, 3, 5, and 8. Register, eye exam, blood type, document check, and the last step is getting your address and photo. It is only a five minute wait from there to get your card.
For all:
SEOPC
Av. San Cristóbal Esq.
Av. Tiradentes
Santo Domingo
Rep. Dom.
565-2811 Ext 3111

Getting a Dominican License

This is not true for the USA! The US Embassy or Consulate does not Authenticate drivers licenses, as they are issued by each state not the Federal Government. You must take the written exam, and the drivers test in order to obtain a Dominican License, this of course after obtaining your Cedula. Total cost about 1800rd.

It's crazy that the Dominican Government should ask foreigners to get a Dominican Licence. Dominicans cannot drive. So if foreigners' licenses are too good for the DR, they have to downgarde their ability and get a Dominican licence?

Just get the forms in ban Reservas and go straight to the dept of transport in Puerto Plata to pass your ridiculous oral and driving test. Will cost you around 900RDS for 1 person. You will get a provisionnal licence for 40 days ,then another form from Ban Reservas to fill in and back at the Dept of transport to exchange DL for definitive one valid for 4 years, then same last process. The lot cost around 1800 RDS for one person. Easy to do, simple and fast.No need about the ""boullabaisse"" from Alberto Gonzales !!!!

BS you should drive with your foreign license if you get stop just tell them you just got in. Most people here actually do not have a driver licence anyway.

MOST people here who are commenting are missing the point. IF you have an accident or have your car stolen and that you have lived in this country more than 3 MONTHS , and you do not have a Dominican driving licence, you WILL NOT get reimbursed by the insurance companies even if they have insured you without asking you if you were in possesion of a Dominican licence. I had a bad experience with AMBER of Sosua , never asking me when I went to their office to insure my car if I had a Dominican licence , NOT to prove that you can drive here AH, AH but purely that a Dominican licence is compulsory in order to be properly insured.
Hope that everybody enderstand.
