The authorities recovered them on Friday afternoon while searching for wreckage of the plane which crashed, allegedly when trying to drop a cache of drugs in the area. Early reports had suggested the plane had been fired on by a helicopter crewed by DNCD (Drugs Control) officers.

A rescue team composed of members of the Armed Forces and the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) accompanied Higuey prosecutor and coroner to collect the corpses from the scorched area where the plane came down.
Hector Perez Leonardo, Higey coroner, ordered the removal of the bodies by boat and arranged for them to go to Higuey. From there they were transferred to the Forensic Pathology Institute in Santo Domingo.
Several senior officers of the Armed Forces and Police, assigned to the DNCD, accompanied government officials and the medical examiner to the crash site in order to assist in the investigations into the circumstances surrounding the plane crash.
"We are confirming that in the Southeast of Isla Sana, about 12 miles from Bayahibe, we found the scattered remains of what appeared to be the crew of an aircraft which had crashed on the shores of the island," said Roberto Lebron, spokesman for the DNCD.
He added that beside one of the bodies had been found a wallet with several documents relating to Jaime Alfonso Alvarado Paniagua, a Colombian national, a fact that makes clear that the plane came from South America.
When asked about reports that the DNCD had shot the plane down, Lebron insisted that "this is all conjecture, since the DNCD is obliged to act in strict accordance with international standards governing civil aviation, primarily the Chicago Convention to which our country is a signatory. "
