The raise will be phased in with 15 per cent in the supplementary budget in August this year, 10 percent in the January 2011 budget and five percent in the supplementary budget in August 2011.
The announcement was made by Agripino Nunez Collado after a three hour meeting, who said the Colegio Médico Dominicano (CMD) will sign an agreement that involves responsibility for the doctors and improvements in the health sector services.
The increase would represent an expense to the Government of 900 million pesos this year.
CMD president, Senen Caba said the agreement will be signed but it must first be submitted to the National Assembly.
For his part, Vice President Rafael Alburquerque, who headed the government commission said this is not a simple increase in wages, but involved a wider agreement covering improvements in health services to benefit the poorest households are those who attend hospitals.
He explained that there will be a rearrangement in the health sector, including an audit and that relevant measures are being taken to ensure that services are of higher quality.
He said committees of the Ministry of Public Health and the CMD will be formed to enter into such agreements.
