3 drowned after Dominican earthquake

The boat was sailing from Bayahibe to the island of Saona when the quake struck at just after 4pm. There were also five foreign tourists on board, 4 Russians and an Italian, but they were all saved, according to Navy reports.
The strong earthquake of 5.2 on the Richter scale was felt in the East, the Capital and the province of Santo Domingo, reported the Seismological Institute at the UASD, but up to last night there no other reported casualties or damage.
The quake was recorded at 4:16:40 PM, said Eugenio Polanco Rivera, director of the Seismological Institute of the UASD.
The epicenter was located in the Mona Passage, which divides the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, at latitude 18.3 and longitude 68.4.
Spokesmen for the fire brigades in Higuey and La Romana said that, despite the intensity of the tremor felt in the area, there was no reported damage or loss of life.
Polanco Rivera confirmed that the phenomenon was felt throughout the East, Santo Domingo and Las Terrenas in Samana.
He said he had reports that it had even been felt in the northern region of Argentina. Yesterday at 4:40 am there was also a 2.9 magnitude tremor in the Canal de la Mona, in the Dominican Republic and a 3.7 magnitude quake in Puerto Rico at 3:27 in the afternoon.
