5 dead in polling day violence

The victims were identified as PRD activists, Andrés Paula Asencio and Luis José Peña Revi, and PLD members Benjamín López Nolasco, Mario Jáquez Bautista and Sención Amparo. 
Andres Asencio died after being shot during a clash between PRD and PLD, near a polling station at Pedro Domínguez school, in Cambita Garabito. He died while being treated in hospital in San Cristobal. In the same incident 3 men were injured; Candido de los Santos, Robin Staling Lebron and Virgilio Pacheco.
Sención Amparo, 60, was critically injured near Enedina Puello school, in Madre Vieja Norte, San Cristobal, and died in the local hospital..
José Luis Peña Revi, 37, died early on Sunday from gunshot wounds at the Enriquillo municipal park in Barahona. Reports suggest he was shot from a vehicle driven by PLD supporters. Wilfredo Perez, 18, was injured in the same incident.
Benjamin López Nolasco died after being shot in the chest, in a clash with militants from the PRD in Manteca de Castillo.
Jose Mesa, 60, and Eladio Vargas, 55, were injured by knives, stones and sticks, during a fight between militants of the two major parties in the courtyard of the Las Tejas school in Galvan, Bahoruco.
Among the other injured were a man in Penón, Barahona after a political argument with his son, and four people in Villa Altagracia, including the public relations officer of the State Sugar Council (CEA), who were assaulted by an attacker with a machete as they were about to enter a polling station in the town hall.
Previous years have seen similar violent incidents on polling day.
2000 saw three dead and a bomb explosion, the same number died in 2002. In 2004 there were six killed and two wounded and the same number died in 2006. In 2008 there were no deaths but four people were injured in various fights.
