60,000 tons of sugar to be imported
posted on: Mar 24 2010 11:7 by Royston. Viewed 446 times.The Dominican National Sugar Institute (INAZUCAR) announced Tuesday the import of 60 thousand tons of sugar, including 32 thousand tons of cream sugar. The imports are to come from Brazil, Honduras and Guatemala.

There have been growing complaints about product shortages and escalating prices from different sectors of the country. Apart from the prospect of empty shelves in supermarkets, concern has been raised by everyone from bakers to brewers.
The executive director of the agency, Faustino Jimenez, said that this quantity, "will finally resolved the shortage of product in the local market in recent weeks due to increased demand from Haiti after the earthquake in January.
Apart from the shortage, the country also saw an increase in prices, which have gone up several pesos above the previous cost. Currently the wholesale price is 18 pesos a pound.
