A time-lapse video of the Earth shot by astronauts on board the International Space Station has captured an amazing view of the Northern Lights.

The clip, described by Scientific American magazine as “the best video of Earth from space ever made”, has notched up more than half a million hits on YouTube.

The footage of the Aurora Borealis was recorded by the crews using a special lowlight camera between August and October this year.

Produced by German artist Michael Konig, the five-minute video starts off by showing the USA before moving on to Australia where the Aurora Australis are visible.

The footage also takes in flashes of lightning in the clouds, light caused by human cities and moving satellites illuminated by the sun.

Click play on the video below to watch.
