A landslide victory of the PP

The worst economic crisis in democracy and failed management of the Socialist Government, which kicked off the legislature with two million unemployed and ends with five, has given the PP an absolute majority to manage hands-free exit of the pit in the middle of the Gale. The new President, Mariano Rajoy, will govern with the support of its 186 members (above the best outcome in seats of the PP for Aznar in 2000) with the scarce 110 members of the PSOE, his worst result of the recent democratic phase.

In his first appearance after the landslide victory, Rajoy has shown a euphoria contained before the thousands of people who have approached the party headquarters in Madrid to celebrate the results. "I gobernaré without sectarianism." "No one has to feel concern", he warned. With the promise of putting to work from morning to put Spain "to the head of Europe, Rajoy has admitted that, faced with the delicate financial situation, not u000acan promise "miracles" and it has invited all their voters and non-voters to participate in the Exchange.

This overwhelming victory óhasta only yesterday there had been three absolute majorities in ten elections generalesó leaves the PP with an all-embracing power in Spain. It will rule in the central administration without the need for partnerships; now send 11 of the 17 communities and half of Councils. The sinking of the PSOE, which has fallen 13 points in electoral support (43 per cent has been less than 30 per cent), has promoted the absolute majority of the PP (44 per cent, nearly five points more than in 2008).

Admits defeat
surrounded by some of his faithful, Rubalcaba admitted last night the Socialist defeat: "We have clearly lost the elections". At the edge of 2230, and after the call of rigor to the winner, the Socialist has appeared at the headquarters of the Party of calle Ferraz to announce that it has proposed to the Secretary-General of the PSOE, José Luis Rodríguez u000aZapatero, the convening of a Congress regular to manage the future of the party after the debacle.

Ten millions of Spaniards have given today their confidence Rajoy, for 56 years, recorder of property and professional politician from 26. In his 30 years of experience in public management has been President of Diputació (Pontevedra, 1983-1986) and Vice President of the Xunta de Galicia (1986-1987), Minister for Territorial Administration, education, Interior, Presidency, spokesman and Vice Chairman of the Government between 1996 and 2003. It is the same person who failed two consecutive times in the two previous general elections and resisted the internal onslaught in his party, where there were sectors that desconfiaron Rajoy following the second disappointment, in 2008. His perseverance and the economic situation led him in aloft until a complete success for his party.

Ambiguous proposals
the leader of the PP has come to the u000ahigher with a flat speech full of ambiguous proposals based on an intentionally undefined programme which must now realize. The early days of Rajoy in command of the Government, from the second half of December if there is no an advance agreed with the Socialists, will be particularly intense and complex. With Spain solvency under minimal and markets calling for more public spending cuts, the leader of the PP must resolve within two weeks the rise of 8.5 million of pension; decide the wages of 3.1 million employees (trimmed and frozen since year and a half ago) and, with some more time but not much, meter where the scissors to save at least € 16 billion next year to reduce the deficit to 4.4% and so the commitments with Europe. Their main duties as soon as will be sit in the armchair of President of the Council of Ministers. The first time that the PP agreed to the Government of the nation, in u000a1996, José María Aznar promised at his inauguration lower deficit to 3% in a year (then was 4.4 per cent) to comply with the European convergence criteria. Rajoy now turn you a similar, but much more difficult course.

An uncertain future
your opponent, the Socialist Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, faces an uncertain future for a result which is the most serious defeat in the history of the PSOE. The Socialist leaders who predicted a major crisis if Rubalcaba was not more than 120 members already have the result for further elucubrando about a war opened up by the leadership of the party. All the Socialist strategy of claiming the voting on the left for the PSOE, or crush the PP return to power was the danger the purchasing power of pensions, unemployment benefits or civil rights, has been in vain. The incessant rise in unemployment over three years to reach five million u000aunemployed citizens was a too heavy slab for socialism. The thud of the month of may at the municipal and regional elections, where the PSOE lost all its regional power and much of the local at the hands of the PP was the notice of the debacle of 20-N.

The last message of the Socialist candidate, who asked at the end of campaign rallies the Spaniards not put in the hands of the PP "full power" does not seem to have become popular among the electorate.

A better relationship with Latin America
without giving too much detail, the winner of the Sunday elections and future President of the Spanish Government, Mariano Rajoy, expressed during the election campaign his desire to give a new air to relations with Latin America.

Expected some changes with respect to the phase of the Socialist José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. For example, the centroderechista people's Party and Rajoy always have been very critical with u000aGovernments like those of Venezuela and Cuba during his period in opposition. But major reforms announced in economy, where the Conservative leader faces the challenge to revive growth and to reduce an overwhelming 21.5 per cent unemployment rate.

"We export to all Latin American less than Portugal", said Rajoy in an interview to the El Pais Madrid shortly before the elections. "The work to be done there is enormous." Spain is less present in Latin America increasingly economically and politically. Europe remains the main commercial ally in the Iberian country, hogging more than 70% of exports and nearly 60 per cent of imports.

Substantial change is that Asia and Africa have been relegated to Latin America as partners.

Between January and August 2011 - latest available official data-, only 5.7 per cent of the total number of exports and imports Spanish were made with countries of America u000aLatin.
