Advancement of universities among accomplishments of 2011

Various efforts made by the Dominican universities to overcome its shortcomings and weaknesses is the main achievement of higher education during the year 2011.

Thus highlights the Minister of higher education, Ligia Amada Melo, who said that the country's universities have undergone improvements plans to overcome the shortcomings of research, few teachers with doctorate level and dedicated time complete, lack of laboratories and tutoring students with underachievement, defective physical infrastructure and problems of management.

The official also gave to know the main purposes has the portfolio which runs this year, which includes continuing the process of improving the quality of higher education, promote the training of doctors, promote the process of accreditation of universities and careers with international standards, and expand and strengthen scientific research and u000aeducational.

Improvements that have been carrying out of the country's universities is the result of the commitment made by their rectors and authorities following the five-year evaluation process that two years implemented the Ministry of higher education in 35 schools.

"This has been a movement in the universities of much reflection on the part of authorities, what its shortcomings, weaknesses;" "and the truth is that they have made extraordinary efforts to overcome them, and for me that is our main achievement," said Melo de Cardona.

Added that it is a continuous process that is not being limited to 2011, because with the great interest which have the guiding modernize and be consistent with universities of international standards, it is a fact that will continue with the efforts that had already begun.

"This process ensures that the quality of higher education, if it is not currently optimal, is on track for" u000a"improvement", said, and added that their aspiration is that universities in the country in 5 or 10 years already have category of excellence, which can, even, some being ranked as universities with world-class recognized.

Scholarship

also in 2011, the Government through the Ministry of higher education awarded 1,780 scholarships international and around four thousand for local universities, being the year in which more educational facilities were handed over.

Over 5700 students graduated from the English programs of immersion sponsored by the Ministry of higher education.

Redesign curriculum

The Ministry of higher education increased the number of research projects in 2011, and rose up to six years the time for completion of a project and for an amount of up to RD$ 12 million, that have become efforts to form a community of researchers.

Other actions proposed to carry out the Ministry of higher education for 2012 is strengthening internationalization, facilitating the exchange of professors and university students with international universities of high prestige and international recognition.
