After 2 months, flood victims still homeless in Puerto Plata

The recent handing over of 7 reconstructed homes by the District Governor has done little to quell the growing anger in the area.

About 50 families lost their homes and possessions in the floods when rivers coming down from the mountain overflowed and swept away their houses.
Santiago Guzman, Ana Giselda Almonte and Eusebio Valerio, heads of families living in the area of Los Limones, complained that, almost two months after the tragedy, they are still awaiting the aid promised by the government.
They pointed out that some people have found places to live with other family members whose homes were not so badly damaged, but others are still forced to sleep outside in the streets.
Almonte, Guzman and Valerio also want action taken to control the flow of the rivers running through their area to prevent future tragedies happening again.
Meanwhile children are playing baseball in the dry riverbed which so quickly transformed into a raging torrent on February 14th and their parents wait for the promised help to rebuild their lives.
