On Tuesday night, investigators from the Central Electoral Board (JCE) were inspecting the ballot papers which apparently also had been marked in favor of the candidate for mayor of Nagua, Inocencio Mercedes, and Jose Polanco, running for mayor of Matancita.
Protests are continuing around the province and Senator Martinez Vasquez said that what has happened in the province is an ''electoral assault'' by the ruling party.
In a separate move, The president of the PRD, Miguel Vargas, said on Wednesday he had appointed a commission to contest the results of elections where there were "distortions and violations."
Following a meeting with the majority of senatorial candidates of the PRD, he said the party's general secretary, Orlando Jorge Mera and Acting President Andres Bautista, will instigate a legal challenge while, Milagros Ortiz Bosch, former Vice President of the Republic will head another committee to expose the scope of alleged irregularities in the election.
Vargas explained that the purpose of the PRD is to ensure that upon completion of the popular vote the electoral process is not contaminated by "the massive purchase of votes, the use of state institutions and resources, repression and the media siege
imposed by the government."
Meanwhile the repercussions of the defeat within the PRD continue. "If Miguel Vargas Maldonado had the moral standing a European politician, he would relinquish the presidency of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD)," Guido Gomez Mazara said on Wednesday.
He said that although the ruling Dominican Liberation Party used state resources in favor of their candidates, Vargas Maldonado suggested errors in the selection of candidates was the main cause of defeat.
Mazara claimed that the PRD president has not made efforts to curb government corruption by the PLD and accused him of not doing so because he has contracts in the second subway line being built by the Government.
