The Metropolitan Transit Authority will have over three thousand agents and office personnel on the streets, highways and roads, to assist in preventing traffic accidents and help drivers.
The agency's director, Major General Jose Anibal Sanz Jiminin, said the operation will focus on the main access routes into the country, taking into account the considerable increase in traffic from the capital to the provinces, especially the beaches.
He said that agents are equipped with radar for speed enforcement, breathalyzers to curb alcohol consumption by drivers and other preventive mechanisms.
The measure will also involve strengthening patrols at strategic points of the National District and Santo Domingo province, highways and roads.
"Our staff will work to reduce to a minimum the number of accidents and traffic violations during the Christian holiday, which will mean lives will be saved as a result," said Sanz Jiminin.
He said AMET not permit the carriage of passengers in the open bed of commercial vehicles such as trucks and vans. He also warned that only one passenger can be carried on motorcycles, provided it is not a child, and that both must wear a helmet.
The operation will involve the use of motorcycles and dozens of monitoring patrols, located at strategic points as well as a collection center for drivers and their companions so they can take a break or solve any mechanical problem on their vehicles.
"We hope that drivers use Holy Week as a valuable opportunity for reflection and Christian family reunion, and for those who like to go to the country, beaches and rivers, we hope they do so with due restraint and caution, avoiding excessive speed and sticking the traffic law," he said.
The Director General of Land Transit (DGTT) has announced the suspension of tolls on Dominican roads from noon on Thursday to 6:00pm on Friday. This is being done to avoid delays as the holiday traffic reaches its peak.
There are also restrictions on the movement of heavy goods vehicles from Thursday at noon until Monday at 6:00 pm.
