Mark Hiram Yellen, 41, and Dr. Paula Moffett, 56, were traveling home to Memphis from the Dominican Republic, where Yellen owned a real estate development and investment company.
Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration have begun an investigation at the Tuscaloosa Regional Airport, but local police reports say there is no immediately obvious cause of the crash of the 2005 Cirrus SR22 single-engine prop plane.
Mark Yellen was involved in a food production and export business in Santo Domingo and had a farm on the North Coast. He traveled extensively as a business consultant but his main focus in Dominican Republic was real estate, he had several properties at Las Canas near Gaspar Hernandez. However he also became involved in the local community with a micro loan program designed to help individuals with a good idea to get started and established in business.
More information about how the crash happened is expected to be available as the federal authorities conduct their investigation.
