Executives from the Spanish company Extrm Park S.L. yesterday announced the construction of an amusement park in Cabeza de Toro, Punta Cana, which has been classed by its developers as the most modern in Latin America, with an investment of US$ 180 million dollars.

The investment was announced in Punta Cana during a meeting chaired by Minister of Tourism Francisco Javier Garcia, Banco Popular’s corporate vice president of the tourist sector, Juan Manuel Martín de Oliva, Antonio Jiménez Fernández and Salvador Ballesteros, Executive Director and President of Extrme Park. Also at the meeting were Javier Martin, CEO and Mario Brazzale, project manager.

Ballesteros explained that they are planning to include in the park an artificial ski slope, a pool of 26 thousand square meters that will simulate up to 46 different types of waves and could also be suitable for international surfing competitions.

The park will also have an amphitheater, where local and international artists can perform, Formula One simulators, a robotic roller coaster and a nightclub to rival any in the international area. “We understand that this investment will have a positive influence as that some tourists will visit this destination repeatedly just for this park and this will favor the hotels in the area,” said the president of Extrme.

The Spanish executives reported that the project will occupy an area of one million square meters and will comply with all the required safety guidelines.

The Minister of Tourism enthusiastically greeted the presentation by the investors, and promised to support everything they had discussed, as this project is of great interest not only to foreign visitors but also for local tourists. He estimated that this project will position Punta Cana as the most interesting destination in Latin America and the Caribbean.

“A park of this size with so many attractions, which are not even in the large traditional parks, will undoubtedly convert Punta Cana into the most interesting destination in Latin America,” said Garcia.

Extrm plan to provide more details about the park in the official presentation scheduled for February or March 2012, and estimate that the project will not take more than a year to construct.

Maybe this will encourage Disney to continue with their original plans to open a park in Puerto Plata - Disney to open in Puerto Plata
