The fatalities included women and children. There were some reports of a pregnant woman also being killed in the accident. Navy divers and Civil Defense units rescued 16 victims from the sea and they were sent to the Dario Contreras hospital.
Rescuers expressed amazement that there were not more casualties as the 25 seat bus was packed full of passengers, many of them standing. A number of people saved themselves by jumping from the bus as it plunged into the sea.
Some reports have suggested a tire blow-out caused the accident, others have suggested the driver suffered a heart attack.
Police General Hector Garcia Cuevas was on the scene last night supervising the rescue.
Details about the cause of the accident will be given this Saturday by the Police and the Emergency Operations Center (COE). In addition, all the victims will be identified.
