Bakers still owed RD$300 million for school bread

Bakers who supply bread for school meals are demanding payment of a debt of RD$300 million from the Ministry of Education.

The petition was delivered on Tuesday by President of the Union of Small and Medium Industrial Bakers (UMPIH), Francisco Capelln, who explained that the only reason the claimants have not gone bankrupt is thanks to financial support given by his organization.

Capelln acknowledged that they had received a payment of RD$50 million in late May but he said this was not sufficient to keep his members in business.

The president of the union asked the Minister of Education, Melanio Paredes, to settle the debt before the start the new school year.
