Bakers to suspend school meals deliveries

Viewed 303 times. The national bakers union, La Unin Nacional de Pequeos Empresarios de la Harina (UMPIH), announced it will suspend supplies to schools for children's meals from Monday if the Ministry of Education does not pay a debt of RD$200 million owed to the suppliers
.
The dispute with the government has been rumbling on for several months now and with the school year re-starting, bakers have taken the opportunity to bring some leverage to their claims for payment.
President of UMPIH, Francisco Capelln, asked the Education Minister, Melanio Paredes, to accelerate the payment process, even by honoring a commitment to pay at least 50%.
He said he regretted that the school breakfast would be suspended, but said he has no other alternative.
However, he also denied recent press reports that the price of bread in the shops would be going up, even with the latest rise in flour prices.
