Barrick Gold charged with working without a permit

The allegation is that the firm based in Toronto, Canada, is working illegally since it does not have an environmental license for the new project known as the Pueblo Viejo Dominicana Corporation.
The writ seeks the implementation of Law 64-00 on environment and natural resources, and the regulation of licensing and permits.
Although the mining firm is negotiating for a permit to operate, construction work has already started which is in violation of the regulations. The law states that no work can be done without first obtaining the permits.
The company's lawyers asked for the case to be dismissed but this request was rejected and a verdict is expected on October 19.
At the same time, Mayor Rafael Molina Lluberes is trying to prevent Barrick Gold using water from the Haitillo dam. The mayor claims that gold mining would pollute the waters which should be declared exclusively for human consumption, agricultural production and power generation.
Barrick Gold has been facing opposition and protests from other parts of the world as well. Indigenous representatives from Papua New Guinea and Chile went to Canada in May to speak at the company's annual general meeting of shareholders in Toronto to bring attention to the damage allegedly caused to the environments in these countries by the mining operations.
