Edenorte has provided an explanation for the punishing series of blackouts affecting the North Coast.

Apparently the generating plant at San Felipe in Costambar, Puerto Plata is out of action until Friday 22nd as it undergoes major maintenance work.

A spokesman for the electricity distribution company said the this was essential work which would seriously affect the long term performance of the plant if it was ignored. He said that the San Felipe plant's withdrawal from the local network meant loss of power even on '24 hour" systems and much longer blackouts than normal for other consumers.
