Bread strike threatened
posted on: Feb 10 2010 11:44 by Royston. Viewed 119 times. The Union of Small and Medium Industrial Bakers (UMPHI) has this week threatened to suspend, as of next week, the supply of bread for school breakfasts because of a debt of some 300 million pesos owed to them by the Ministry of Education.

The union charged Melanio Paredes, Minister of Education, of reneging on a promise to repay the debt in December.
"In this situation the Bakers’ union asks the President, Leonel Fernández, to intercede to prevent the withdrawal of one of the finest social programs, the school breakfast, due to the failure of the education Minister to keep a promise.” said a spokesman.
He added that some suppliers have received sporadic payments for one or two accounts, but that this sector can no longer supply bread and cake because they need the outstanding payments.
He further explained that they have been able to maintain the service to date because the Multiple Services Cooperative Flour Processors had provided the raw ingredients. However, all concerned now needed to be paid in order to continue with manufacture and delivery of the bread
