The Ambassador of Great Britain, Steven Fisher, complained yesterday that there is no security for foreign investment in the Dominican Republic and that a British company had to leave recently because it was being extorted.

However, he explained that the United Kingdom is aware of the excellent work being done with the Dominican institutions.

The diplomat acknowledged the efforts made by President Leonel Fernández, the role that civil society plays, and journalists that focus on corruption, noting that all of this is  a positive signal.

However, he said that many Dominicans complain of corruption in the country, and that investors, both Dominican and foreign, also complain and experience difficulties.

Fisher said that a major British company, name not revealed, left the country recently, and that others have told him that they have been victims of corruption and have been asked for very large bribes, noting that this is the negative side of the problem.

Fisher spoke while delivering a lecture on the topic of anti-corruption in the Auditorium of the Attorney General of the Republic, where there additionally present, Attorney Radhamés Jiménez Peña, the President of the Supreme Court of Justice, Jorge Subero Isa, Monsignor Agripino Núñez Collado, director of the administrative corruption prevention Department (DPCA), Hotoniel Bonilla, as well as others.

The diplomat said that the Dominican authorities can fight strongly and consistently against corruption in order to improve the image of the country and reach more investors.

He said that maintaining the war against drug trafficking, organized crime and corruption, will contribute to peace, social stability and economic development of the country and the region. This he said would attract more tourists, not only British, but from other countries, and more investment into the country.
