Briton arrested for growing marijuana
posted on: Apr 30 2010 15:48 by Royston. Viewed 1188 times. A British resident here was arrested by the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) with 185 marijuana plants he had cultivated in a communal area in Los Hidalgos.
The foreigner was identified as Avil Freedman, 30, who lives in calle Primera , Cuesta Hermosa although the plants were growing on "Loma de la Bestia" according to a report from DNCD.
The spokesman said Freedman was arrested when he was applying water and fertilizer to a small plantation of marijuana when a DNCD team was checking the area.
Reports have not yet confirmed whether the Briton has a permanent residence in the country, but the DNCD said contact had been made with the Director of Immigration to find out the status of the foreigner, in addition they are reporting the case to the British embassy.
From Santo Domingo, DNCD spokesman Roberto Lebron, confirmed the arrest of the accused and said the inspectors from the Puerto Plata office acted on information received. He said they had mounted surveillance until the officers were able to determine that marijuana was planted on the summit of "Loma de la Bestia" and the discovery was certified by the acting prosecutor.
