Calls to allow older car imports

), in the Northern Region, have called on the government to allow the importation of vehicles in good condition aged from 2001 onwards.
The president of the organization, Euler Veloz, blamed the new car dealers for pushing for the embargo and the legal provision which limits the importation of vehicles from 2006 onwards.
He complained that most buyers are looking for older vehicles and there is a small percentage of people who can afford new cars.
Veloz said that sales of vehicles had increased by 20 % in the latter half of the year, but demand could have been greater if older vehicles had been available on the import market.
He said it is difficult for car dealers to offer vehicles at prices from RD$150,000 to RD$200,000 when the law prevents the import of vehicles older than 2006. He complained that this is not appropriate in a poor country.
Veloz insisted that vehicles of 2000 and 2001 from the United States are ideal for the market in this country as their former American owners maintain their cars well.
He added that he had begun to discuss the issue with government and customs authorities and was hopeful of another meeting with the Director General of Customs.
