The murder rate increased by 4% compared to the year 2010, when there were 2,472 violent deaths (24.7 percent each inhabitants) and for this year, 2011, the rate stood at 28.7.

The increase in killings and murders is recorded throughout the country steadily since 2003, as a result of the increase in trafficking and drug abuse, which in some sectors of the capital is presented as a real epidemic.

Despite the measures implemented by the Government, and the effort shown by President Leonel Fernández, the actions have been insufficient, because they follow gangs dominating in the neighborhoods and increasingly open more social clubs and liquor business sponsored by the narco.

According to data from the National Bureau of statistics, in 2003 there were 1,649 cases (18.73%), but this figure rose geometrically in 2004 to 2,260 (25.25), a large number of these violent deaths u000aauthorities linked them to the growing drug trafficking and organized crime. In 2005 the trend with 2,403 continued (26.40), but in 2006 the rate was reduced to 23.56%, i.e. 259 killings less than the previous year. The year 2007 was much better, since killings decreased from 2,144 in 2006 to 2,111 (22.07); and they returned to upload to 2,394 (25.14) in 2008. In 2009 there were 2,375 (24.34), but it was the year 2010 in greater rate of killings of the Decade, with 2,472 (25.01).

The decade that began with the 2011 does not bring good omens, because so far this year the murder rate stood at around 28.7%.

Guards and police

the majority of deaths from homicide are men, between 17 and 32 years. In the past three years, for example, 2008, 2,335 homicide 2,149 were men and only 186 women; in 2009 the total of 2,352 included 2,173 men and 179 women; and in 2010 u000a2,296 total of 2,474 men were killed. Deaths of women of the year were 178.

The year 2011 recorded until last December 29 the figure of 210 killed or women killed by men, mostly husbands and lovers.

During the year a good percentage of violent deaths occurred on matters relating to drugs, crime, common and legal actions of the police, who this time reached the figure of half a hundred dead.

A record was registered with the death of 96 officers of the police and members of the armed forces, which fell mostly in attacks and clashes with criminals common.

Fifteen senior officers were killed by people, for reasons still unknown publicly.
