According to spokesmen for small and medium tobacco producers in the North, Ludivino Díaz and Griselda Valle, the new regulations would prohibit the manufacture and sale of cigarettes which include the "Burley" tobacco variety grown here.
This variety is exported on a large scale to Canada, USA, Spain and other countries, they explained at a press conference. 'Growing "Burley" tobacco is the only livelihood for many families in the North',said Diaz .
Dominican Republic and other affected countries have complained to the World Trade Organization (WTO ) about this proposal from Canada to ban more than 5000 different components used in cigarette manufacture, including the "Burley" tobacco popular with Dominican farmers.
