Executive vice president of the Dominican Corporation of State Electrical Companies (CDEEE), Celso Marrazini, admitted Monday there had been a wave of blackouts of up to 18 to 20 hours in parts of the country.

After apologizing to customers, he said there had been a deficit in supply last week of 35% but that the situation was now coming back to normal.

He explained that the deficit was due to a delayed ship carrying coal, which resulted in several plants, including the San Felipe in Puerto Plata, Falcombridge, Itabo I and others. Also out of action was one of the plants at Los Mina.

On the subject of San Felipe, Marranzini said it was still operating at only 65% capacity, but the situation would improve with Los Mina V coming into operation.

Regarding the Falcombridge plant he said the lack of supply was due to financial issues caused by a debt to the refinery for the month of January. Marranzini said the resources had not been available but that now they were.

Moreover, the official denied reports that his salary had increased and showed a check for 150 thousand pesos, corresponding to the first fortnight of February.

He said he earns 300 thousand pesos in monthly salary, and has no need of an increase. He said he had taken the position to help the President and not for financial reward.
