Chomsky, who is one of the most admired by Chavez, reported yesterday on Wednesday an open letter concerning the detention of Judge Maria Lourdes Afiuni, which has become a key case on human rights. Is detained for alleged corruption
The intellectual requests the mandatary "acting in a manner consistent with humanitarian values professed by the Bolivarian revolution", and put an end to the house arrest of the judge.
Professor of lingu¨.stica at the Massachusetts Institute of technology asked the representative intercede in favour of Afiuni claiming that "there is no guarantee of a fair and impartial trial".
"Afiuni has suffered far too much and should be released," said Chomsky to denounce that the judge u000aremains arrested in his apartment in the custody of a dozen of national guards, he is prohibited from speaking with the press and "receive sunlight".
Chomsky said in a telephone interview from Cambridge, Massachusetts, noted that "others in Venezuela obtained the presidential pardon in the Christmas season, and I hope that this case will be also".
The brother of the judge, Nelson Afiuni, said that the judge is not receiving medical care to treat two cysts in the breasts and other health problems because all requests to see a doctor should be submitted to the Court for approval.
