Corpse discovered along with suspected ‘torture chamber’ after police gun down killers

Police last week discovered a deep pit they believe was being used as a torture chamber by a gang of contract killers. The pit was found on land owned by Basilio Pérez Cuevas (aka ‘El Mayor’), one of the two alleged assassins that they were killed in a clash with police on Saturday in the National District.

An unidentified body was found in the 10 foot deep pit, which according to a coroner had been there for 45 to 60 days.

The land where the grisly discovery was made is on a hill between the Joaquin Balaguer International Airport and the Duquesa municipal dump. Also on the land was a three room shack constructed with zinc sheeting. There was blood residue in the shack, and a stem from a bunch of bananas which police believe may have been to feed the alleged killers’ captives.

Last night a spokesman for the National Police, General Nelson Rosario, said there are three large water tanks on the site thought to contain more victims’ bodies covered with quicklime to hide the smell of decomposition.
He explained that they found the place after following up on information provided by someone they were investigating.

Police are also looking for a Haitian man they believe was in charge of watching the torture center.

The discovery has apparently caused a lot of attention in the local community, a poor area vacant lots banana trees and herb growing.

Police said the investigation will continue because there is suspicion that there are more bodies waiting to be found and they are chasing a man who escaped on Saturday, known as Richard Bolívar Encarnación (aka ‘Landy’).

After Saturday’s clash, police say they seized various weapons, including M-19 rifle, five pistols, dozens of magazines for AK-47 rifles, other guns, bulletproof vests, military equipment, a substance known as devil’s acid and several bank checks made out to Basilio Pérez Cuevas.

Police shot and killed two suspected gunmen, suspected of seven contract killings, various assaults and other crimes. Special agents of the police criminal intelligence unit were involved in an alleged shootout that took place on the corner of Ortega y Gasset and John F. Kennedy.

The two dead alleged killers were named as 24 year-old Basilio José Pérez Cuevas and Kelvin Ramírez Castro. The third suspect, Richard Bolívar Encarnación managed to escape.
