The National District Attorney's Office and the Director of Prosecution against Administrative Corruption have arrested the secretary general of the Office of the Appellate Court accused of embezzling millions of pesos deposited with the court as securities.

Odalis Catalina Ubiera Castro is accused of diverting the funds to his own accounts instead of paying into the court's account with Banco de Reservas. He has been detained in the prison of Ciudad Nueva pending a date for his trial.
The authorities have not yet determined how long the alleged offences have been going on.

The indictment claims that Castro failed to properly deposit bail monies into the authorized accounts and quotes a missing amount of RD$1,646,000.

On 7 July the Office of the Court of Appeals for the National District wrote to the National District Attorney's Office to report apparent irregularities.
During the investigations which followed, it was determined that, since 16 June this year, money has been missing from the court's accounts but it has not yet been established exactly where the funds allegedly appropriated by Castro have been placed.
