The Dominican Customs (DGA) have put in action from December 1, their customary Christmas grace., involving the exemption of all import taxes for gifts from Dominicans living abroad to their relatives and friends in the Dominican Republic, whose value does not exceed the US$2000.
The general director of Customs, Rafael Camilo said the measure aims to assist and facilitate the stay of thousands of Dominicans who return to the country to spend time with family and friends for Christmas festivities, and who reside in the U.S., Europe, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Mexico and the Caribbean islands.
The measure provided by the DGA will remain in effect until January 7 next year, and only benefits people who have not visited the country during the past six months and applies to a family member if they travel together.
This facility by Customs for Dominicans living abroad will be applied in recognition of their significant economic and social contributions, manifested each year by sending thousands of dollars back here and spending when they visit Dominican territory.
Mailed gifts also exempt
In this regard, the Directorate General of Customs, because of the weight limits imposed by airlines during the Christmas season and New Year, also specified that gifts and items shipped within the stipulated period may be transported through express mail companies (couriers) or freight consolidation.
The package of measures for Dominicans living abroad is a tradition that every year applies to the time the Directorate General of Customs.
