Deadline for new cedulas extended to January

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) has extended the current form of the cedula, or identity card, until January 31 2010. The decision was taken at a regular session of the JCE and creates a further extension as the original plan had been to replace the cards before the elections in May of this year.
From February 2011 everyone will be obliged to begin a process of changing their cedula to the new format however, the JCE has yet to issue a resolution to approve a new design for the identity card, with increased security measures and integrated biometric data.
