Declare unconstitutional law allowing killing of stray dogs
posted on: Jan 11 2012 11:24 by RDugey. Viewed 14 times.The Constitutional Court of Romania today declared unconstitutional a law of Parliament that allowed local authorities to kill tens of thousands of dogs living in the streets of the Balkan country.
The Court accepted an appeal against the law by 124 members of the opposition, who maintained that the text was contrary to the Declaration Universal of of animal rights, proclaimed in Paris.
The appeal also claimed defects of form.
The legal text was approved by Parliament on 22 November and allowed mayors to order the slaughter of the wild dogs if the neighbours showed according to the measure through referendums and other forms of consultation.
The law provoked numerous protests of society civil.
Dozens of animal rights activists welcomed today the decision outside the headquarters of the Tribunal constitutional.
