The jury discussed 15 hours before declaring Mohammad Shafia, 58-year-old guilty of four murders premeditated; his Tuba Yahya, wife of 42 years, and his son, Hamed, 21, in a case that shocked the Canadians from coast to coast.
After reading the verdict, the three defendants again proclaimed his innocence in the murders of the sisters Zainab, for 19 years, 17 Sahar, and Geeti, 13, and Rona Amir Mohammad, 52, the first wife of Shafia, who had no children. The corpses were found on June 30, 2009 in a car plunged into a canal in Kingston, Ontario, where the family had stopped for the night on way back to Montreal from Niagara Falls.
The u000aprosecutors said that the accused killed three sisters because they deshonraron the family to defy the strict disciplinary rules about clothing and socialization.
Shafia's first wife was living with him and his wife. The polygamous relationship, if it was known by the authorities, could have caused the deportation.
