Denials of salmonella in Dominican eggs

The warning of possible contamination was made by a German specialist, Alexander Schovahi, who conducted a study in chicken farms in the northern region. He also drew attention to the lack of control mechanisms on farms, specifically in Moca, Lyceo and La Vega.
Businessman Manuel Escao, president of Asohuevo, said the only way that salmonella bacteria could appear in eggs would be as a result of using animal based feeds.. He said that Dominican producers use a vegetarian diet in rearing egg-producing hens, which reduces the risk of them contracting the bacteria.
The producers say they often send samples for testing and receive clear results. They attributed Schovahi's statement to market interests and Escao went on to deny that the German had even carried out any studies in Licey and Moca.
He said that Asohuevo was about to start a campaign to encourage egg consumption.
