DNCD foil international drugs ring

DNCD president, Maj. Gen. Rolando Rosado Mateo, reported that the institution acted based on information shared with the Special Agency of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Colombia's police and the Belgian police, who were monitoring the use of the ship Summer Wind by an international network.
The ship arrived in the Dominican Republic, with a crew mainly from the Philippines, to collect a cargo of bananas. It had been monitored for the past 15 days.
The ship, registered in the Bahamas, had sailed from Colombia to Belgium and, after calling into port in England, sailed back across the Atlantic to the Dominican Republic.
The drug was found hidden in a false floor of a container by sniffer dogs and acetylene equipment was used to retrieve the haul.
The seizure of cocaine was supervised by Montecristi prosecutor, Jacqueline Zapata and the DNCD chief, who arrived in Manzanillo in an Army helicopter.
The crew of the ship is under arrest, and the drugs are undergoing analysis at DNCD headquarters.
The rest of the empty containers on board are being examined for more drugs.
