Gen. Rolando Rosado Mateo, reported that at a meeting of senior officials, including four colonels, they recommended the expulsion from the armed forces of 13 officers and privates headed by a lieutenant colonel and a captain in the Army, all of whom were assigned to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DNCD).
He said the decision was taken after having determined their alleged links with a network that in March attempted to send 33 kilos of cocaine into Canada through the airport at Puerto Plata.
"We have sacked and brought to justice more than one hundred officers and agents of the DNCD and CESA in the last two years who were linked to these mafia networks in airports," said Rosad.
The report was given during a meeting with reporters, during which the head of the DNCD said that agency investigators, the Dominican Air Force and the Airport Special Security Corps, have obtained such compelling evidence that has forced them to request the dismissal of Col. Ramon A. Vásquez Díaz, Captain Genetti Moronta and first lieutenants Franskimy Moreno Salcedo and Randy Francisco Grullón Puente the first three from the Army and the fourth from the Air Force.
It was also recommended the expulsion of Army Sergeant Majors, Duarte Simón Pierrefrom the Army, and Gerardo Santana de los Santos, Joan Manuel Vargas Lugo and Beltrán Espino Green from the Air Force.
He explained that controls have been strengthened to ensure that drugs cannot leave the country and they will soon install scanners to detect drugs more easily.
Rosado attributed the frequent drug seizures at airports in the country, which he said have increased more than 90 percent so far this year, to the dismantling of criminal networks that for years had been entrenched in airport terminals and allowed out hundreds of kilos of drugs abroad.
