ordered the dismissal of two doctors, two others have been fined and the director of the maternity hospital in Villa Mella has been removed from his post.
These actions are as a result on an inquiry into the death of a young mother, Vernica del Carmen Hernndez Valenzuela, as she went into labor at the hospital at the beginning of this month.
Miguel ngel Cceres and Carmen Fortuna were found to have acted negligently and in breach of national standards in failing to prevent the mother's death.
Dr. Richard Wagner, the hospital director, was removed from his post for failing to ensure compliance with standards and protocols even though he had been at the center of a similar case in May 2007. In addition, doctors Ivelisse Rojas and Gabriela Nez were suspended for one month without pay for failing to live up to their professional standards.
The measures were announced at a press conference held on the release of the report commissioned by the Minister of Health, Dr. Bautista Rojas Gomez, to investigate the death Hernndez Valenzuela.
The press conference was also attended by the president of the Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Milciades Albert and Dr. Jos Delance, Maternity director in the Health Ministry, and other health officials.
Other actions announced were the issuing of written and verbal warnings to all doctors working in maternity health care reminding them of the national standards to which they must adhere.
Also the Chief of National Police was asked to take action against the head of security at the hospital, Sergeant Major Francisco Pascual Moreno, who released the body to relatives without authorization, which delayed and hindered the completion of the autopsy as mandated by law.
Jose Rodriguez Monegro Aybar, of the health ministry, said it was an avoidable death caused by the negligence of the doctors entrusted with the young mother's care.
He listed the regulations and guidelines which had been violated as; Guidelines for the Care of Emergency Obstetrics, Key National Standards of Care in Pregnancy and neonatal care, the National Standards for Epidemiological Surveillance of Maternal and Child Mortality, and the Zero Tolerance Strategy for Preventable Maternal Deaths.
