The majority of Dominicans, when purchasing a car, prefer Japanese brands to American versions, says a new report released by the Dominican Internal Revenue (DGII), which found that 75% of local vehicles purchased in 2009 are from auto manufacturers such as Toyota, Honda, Nissan and others.

The 2009 report from the Internal Revenue also reveals that 8.7% purchased are American brands, 8.3% of the vehicles are of European origin, while the 3.4 are Korean and 3.5% from elsewhere.

These percentages do not include motorcycles, large trucks and other heavy commercial vehicles on the road.

The total number of Japanese vehicles purchased in 2009  was 966, 556, with Toyota, Honda and Nissan being the clear choice of local consumers.

Of these 431,105 are Toyota, 115,642 are Honda, and 98,268 are Nissan. Other major Japanese brands with a sizable presence are Mitsubishi, Daihatsu and Suzuki.

For American brands, the total number purchased was just 111,659. Of these, Chevrolet takes the top spot with 45,251, followed by Ford with 39,079, while Dodge takes third place with 7,618. Other American brands such as Chrysler are evident but in smaller proportions.

The 8.3% of the market dominated by European brands comes to 106,556. Vehicles in this group include Volkswagen, leading with 22,412, Mercedes Benz, with 14,250, and BMW with 18,718. Total Korean vehicles amounts to 3.4% or 44,089. Of these, Hyundai and Kia are leading the Dominican market, with 7,994 and 2,729, respectively. 3.5% of other brands is 45,692.

Changes in 2009
The report reveals that, in 2009, 125,653 motor vehicles were added to the existing 2,444,567 vehicles on the road to reach a total of 2,570,220. This count includes the total number of cars, buses, jeeps, trucks, motorcycles, dump trucks, heavy machinery, trailers, ambulances, and funeral vehicles.

The Dominican vehicular growth represents an increase of 5.1%, which means that during that year the prevailing trend from the middle of this decade was reduced by about 50%.

LEADING EUROPEAN VEHICLE SEGMENT
The DGII newsletter reveals that there are 19,956 cars from luxury European brands, occupying 1.5% of the total, not including motorcycles, dump trucks and heavy machinery. Of these, 2,829 are less than 4 years old.

In the country there are 10,422 cars belonging to the German brand Mercedes Benz. Of these, 1,387 were made between 2006 and 2010.

The European luxury brand with the second highest number of cars in the Dominican Republic is BMW. This amounts to 6,654, of which 834 have their year of manufacture between 2006 and 2010.
