Viewed 454 times. The latest minor quake of 2.8 degrees in the Richter scale struck Tuesday in the eastern part of the Dominican Republic, bringing the total to three in the last 24 hours, according to the Seismological Institute of the University of Santo Domingo.

The event occurred at 07:40 in the morning, with an epicenter located 83 km from Province La Altagracia, and 87Km from La Romana.
On Monday night, at 11:26 there was another tremor of magnitude 3.5 degrees on the Richter scale with its epicenter located at 10 km from Peravia and 56 km from Santo Domingo.
Earlier, at 1:25 pm another stronger tremor of magnitude 4.1 jolted the northern part of the Dominican capital, causing some alarm.
Recent events with earthquakes round the world, including on our own doorstep in Haiti, have intensified local interest in the phenomenon.
There were reports in media last week that seismic experts believed the Dominican Republic was in the right position for a more serious occurrence.
Seismologists Leonardo Reyes Madera and Ernesto Prez Modesto warned that the country runs the risk of being affected by a major earthquake because of the energy storage process of the geological fault of the Northern region.
The experts explained the fault in the Cibao region caused the earthquake that destroyed the cities of Santiago and La Vega in 1561, and since then has been accumulating energy, increasing the likelihood of a high magnitude event.
Observers agree that we should expect an incident every 100 years or so in the Northern region, recalling the most recent in 1842 and 1946. The scientific community was said to have been surprised that the earthquake in Haiti on Jan 12 had not been centered in the North of Dominican Republic.
