A study by the operators of speedtest.net showed that the country only manages 0.8 Mbps as a constant download speed.
Santiago de los Caballeros recorded 0.80 Mbps, while Santo Domingo achieves just 0.76 mbps. Other provinces are: San Pedro de Macoris with 0.70, La Vega with 0.67, La Romana, 0.52 and Puerto Plata, 0.48Mbps.
Engineer Hiddekel Morrison, an expert on technology issues, said the study confirms the complaints constantly made by internet users in the Dominican Republic.
"These are the typical complaints from Internet customers in the country," says Morrison, "low speed and not the speed offered in the contract"
Morrison suggested that more submarine cables were needed to increase the connection speed.
The Index took measurements of speeds of countries from April 17 until May 27 this year and has only included the data from countries with more than 100,000 visits from unique IP addresses and where customers are no more than 300 kilometers away from the server.
The leaders of the survey are; South Korea 34.10 Mbps, Latvia 24.44 Mbps, the Republic of Moldavia with 21.76 Mbps, Japan 20.40 Mbps, Sweden (9.20 Mbps).
Chile is the Latin American country that appears highest on the list, number 53 with a speed of 4.82 Mbps, while the U.S. is in 28th place with 10.17 Mbps .
