Melanio Paredes, Secretary of State for Education says they are looking to move the holidays to January and February.

We have to see the impact it would have on citizens, he said in a speech on the TV show Today.
"The school calendar in the Dominican Republic has to be modified, and we are considering a consultation to see the options. In Panama, for example, the school year starts in March and ends in December, 207 days of teaching."
He noted that many kids miss school days from December to February due to vacations and holidays.
"Families are not fulfilling their responsibilities," he said, and reiterated that he believes a solution would be to have a vacation in January and February in addition to days off in December, rather than the summer months.
