Dominican Supreme Court admits the country has a high level of corruption

The President of the Supreme Court of Justice said yesterday that there is a high level of corruption in public administration in the country, where officials look to make wealth they are unable to justify.

Jorge Subero Isa said that civil service officials  should not enlist for purposes of enrichment or to obtain better a social position. He noted that the country needs more honest and transparent officials.

"We regret that in countries like the Dominican Republic, public servants seek to enrich themselves with a sinful ostentatious display of goods, have a good home and a yacht at the beach, as well as several women to give them more status," said Subero Isa, while delivering a speech at an anti-corruption seminar in the Auditorium of the Attorney-General.

He pointed out that an official who arrives in public service with a certain amount of property can not finish their position with more resources that they cannot justify.

He followed up by saying that to eradicate corruption in the country, only the will has been lacking. He added that the "Declaration of goods" is an excellent tool for measuring the assets of a person. In the judicial system, a judge that cannot justify justify an increase in his wealth while on a salary should not be free of suspicion. "They have to justify every penny of their increase in wealth", he stated.

"Corruption is a very serious problem and we must commit ourselves, not only the authorities, but also all citizens have their share of responsibility in exposing with proof the levels of corruption", said Subero Isa.

He recommended State servants who aspire to achieve wealth go into the private sector, as while in public administration they cannot accumulate much money other than illegally. He argued that in fourteen years as a public servant, he can't have more accumulated wealth than his salary would justify.
