Drought worsens in the capital

The director of the CAASD, Engineer Ramon Rivas, said that in the National District area drinking water production has decreased by more than 120 million gallons daily, equivalent to more than 26 percent.
The aqueducts most affected by drought are Haina-Manoguayabo, which shows a decrease of more than 55 million gallons of water per day, and Duey-Guananitos, which has dropped production from 13 million gallons per day to less than four million gallons.
Also affected are the Isa-Mana aqueduct (from 13 million gallons daily down to 3 million) and the Barrera de Salinidad aqueduct in the East which yesterday showed a decrease in production of 38%, equivalent to about 32 million gallons.
Rivas said the CAASD would not provide water to fill swimming pools in neighborhoods, as it did in previous years.
"This decision is consistent with the water-saving measures mandated by the institution. We understand that by tradition and there are many recreational activities are organized during this special day, but we also know that the only way to minimize the negative effects of drought is to save as much water as possible, "said Rivas.
He clarified that CAASD is working to distribute water in tankers for domestic consumption, in the sectors most affected by drought, especially those located in Santo Domingo West, Los Alcarrizos, Herrera, Pantoja and other suburbs.
