Drugs fugitive Agosto "worked for the DEA"

The claims of alleged links with the DEA are said to explain how it is possible for someone as high up a wanted list as Agosto to evade capture for so long.
Figueroa Agosto escaped from the Rio Piedras State Penitentiary in 1999 by using a forged judicial release authorization.
In that year, another Dominican, Francisco Solano de los Santos, also escaped from the same jail and the reports are alleging links between him and the DEA as well..
"It is possible, almost certain, that both were taken to Puerto Rico by the FBI to work," said the source who pointed out that the fraudulent documents used to secure their release carried an original, official stamp. This was confirmed at the time by Rafael Escobar, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.
"Figueroa was able to do his job and identified to the US authorities many people who were trafficking in drugs," said the Puerto Rican informant.
Over the 10 years that Figueroa spent undetected in Dominican Republic, he was able to amass a fortune from drugs and acquired more than 15 properties. He lived the high life and mixed in the upper levels of society.
He was never suspected of anything until a raid last year on an apartment in la Torre de Alco de Paradisso in La Esperilla, when nearly four million dollars was found in a vehicle.
After finishing his "work" in the Dominican Republic, where he found senior military and police linked to drug trafficking, the source said Figueroa Agosto passed the information he had collected to U.S. authorities.
Another source told news reporters that after his activities became widely known, it is possible Agosto was taken to Central America or even Europe.
"There are many people involved, you can not mention names, everyone knows, but nobody wants to talk about the case," the source said.
