Edenorte dismantles private electric company's distribution in Puerto Plata

A total of 88 high consumption customers, illegally supplied by Puerto Plata de Electricidad
(PPE ) were reconnected to Edenorte on Thursday.

The irregularity, which had been  established in Torre Alta since 2008, was set up by the private company even though the state owned Edenorte has exclusive rights to distribute power in the 14 northern provinces of the country.

Edenorte executives and technicians determined two weeks ago that Puerto Plata de Electricidad  was billing residents in the Torre Alta residential estate for electricity which was supplied through the state owned network. It is believed the average monthly bill for these customers was RD$1,000.

On Thursday, Edenorte brigades accompanied by a police presence, began the process of disconnecting customers from PPE systems and reconnection to the legal network. By Friday afternoon about half of the work had been completed.
