Election preparations in place, but 53% say they will not vote

The chief executive of the Dominican Corporation of State Electrical Companies (CDEEE), Celso Marranzini, said the country will have a full and continuous supply of electricity from Saturday afternoon until Monday May 17.
Marranzini, during a visit to the Central Electoral Board (JCE) accompanied by the principal officials of the country's energy distribution companies, said the electoral process would have no problem due to lack of electricity. He said the additional cost was a necessary contribution to democracy.
The Ministry of Education will make school facilities available to the JCE on Friday afternoon to allow time to prepare for polling for millions of voters in schools placed in JCE control.
The Ministry official said that teaching all over the country will resume on Tuesday 18th, so that on Monday 17, the schools can be cleaned and made ready for the teachers and pupils again.
However, despite all this preparation and the never-ending convoys of excited and noisy political supporters, it seems the attraction of the democratic franchise is lost on many people.
A recent survey has found that when asked "are you going to vote?", 53% said they were not. So it seems that, despite the best efforts of the parties to generate interest in their policies, less than half the country feels interested enough to cast a vote.
